Around the world, going to the movies has been one of the most popular entertainment options for people of all ages. Over the years, filmmaking has transformed into a lucrative industry that is out to make large profits, with little care about storytelling. I think that most movies today feature amazing special effects; however, they lack in great acting and storytelling. Nevertheless, occasionally a movie is released that gives me some hope for the future of Hollywood and filmmaking. Blade Runner 2049 is a movie that has the perfect mix of amazing use of technology and special effects, as well as excellent acting and storytelling.

Blade Runner 2049 was a science fiction film released in October of 2017 (IMDB). The original Blade Runner film was released in the 1980s; hence, this film serves as a sequel (Rotten Tomatoes). The premise of this film is that the Los Angeles Police Department, in California, has a “blade runner” in the department, which is Agent K. Agent K during this job at the department finds out a big secret which could lead to the destruction to the already damaged society. Hence, Agent K races to stop this destruction by locating the last blade runner of the department, named Rick, who ended up becoming lost decades prior. Currently, this film has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and top critics claim that its both “narratively and visually impressive” in carrying on the story that was beloved decades ago (Rotten Tomatoes).
One of the film’s most impressive features is the excellent cast of actors. Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Jared Leto and various other well-known actors in the film industry (IMDB). Some of these actors are very well-known in the American film industry; however, they provide fresh faces and one-of-a-kind performances. Ryan Gosling plays the character “K”, who is the “blade runner”, and his performance is very natural. Although I have seen various movies that stared Gosling, his performance of this character was very distinct.
Another impressive performance was by Harrison Ford, who played the old blade runner named Rick Deckard (IMDB). Harrison Ford is a very famous actor which played Han Solo in the Star Wars series (IMDB). Going into this film I thought he would spoil the movie being such a well-known character in another story line; however, his acting in Blade Runner 2049 was very distinct and impressive. I felt like Ford really got into character and fit this role as Rick Deckard perfectly.

Along with the acting in this movie, the second thing I enjoyed was the special effects. This film had breathtaking visual effects. The production team for this film spent their time making sure that every detail and pixel on the screen was perfect and clear. I have never seen a film so visually impressive. The action scenes seemed real and the “futuristic” elements of the movies, such as the vehicles and weapons, were very realistic. The production team behind this film ensured that this film was visually impressive and had a great plot.
Addition to the visual effects of Blade Runner 2049, the narrative of this film was very well written. I could tell that the screenwriting of this film was worked on for a very long time and the writers ensured that every detail was thought of in its process. My favorite thing about the plot of the film was that you never knew what was going to happen next. I predicted the turn of events throughout the film; however, whenever I thought something was going to happen, the opposite happened. The plot was very unexpected and suspenseful, and this made my viewing experience even more memorable.
The other thing I enjoyed about this movie was the musical score. The music of this film made the experience even more exciting. The music was very dramatic and was scored perfectly with the scenes. Most films, in my opinion, use scores that are very generic; this music can be placed in any action movie. However, the score of this movie seemed to fit perfectly. The music enhanced the film’s visuals and increased suspense with every scene. I was at the edge of my seat watching this film, and I believe the music can be blamed for this.
Blade Runner 2049 is not the ‘best’ film I have ever seen; however, I can place it in my list of Top 5 films from 2017. I am a movie lover, but nowadays films disappoint me more times than not. This film was very good both visually and narratively. Also, the cast of actor was top notch and the screenwriting was on par. If I were to rate this movie out of 100, I would give it a solid 85%. Blade Runner 2049 helped me regain my confidence with modern cinema, and I look forward to watching more releases in 2018.
